best beaches in Spain

Who hasn’t heard about the delicious tapas, flamenco, the Sagrada Familia, and more recently about the gorgeous Enrique Iglesias? Well, those attractions and many others make tourism in Spain thriving and unmissable. The fact is that many tourists want to spend their summer holidays in Spanish lands, because of the beauty and uniqueness of its beaches.

Here are the 3 best beaches to do tourism in Spain and have an unforgettable summer holiday:

Ibiza: Well-known for its intense nightlife and electronic nightclubs (lovely for the party animals). It is also one of the most popular destinations regarding tourist in Spain for those who enjoy seeing a bluish sea of its heavenly beaches. In fact, this island offers more than just a lively nightlife, thanks to well-organized yoga retreats and a wide range of shops.

Mallorca: If you are really looking forward to a dream summer vacation, this destination will meet all your expectations. The warm sea merges with the mountains, the Roman architecture with the famous nightlife of its capital, and the distinctive nature of the Drach caves with the tradition of Villa Pollensa. It is one of the best getaways in Europe.

Gran Canarias: Being one of the Canary Islands, this is another popular destination for tourism in Spain. There are plenty of reasons if we refer to its white sand and black lava beaches. It is not uncommon to see visitors eager to discover the sheer nature of the sea, the prehistoric caves, their traditional food, and maybe playing a golf match.

Tenerife: Is another Canary Island where leisure is the perfect link to enjoy the beaches that will leave you an enviable tan. Its environmental richness lies on natural pools of volcanic origin. For this reason, summer holidays here will be perfect thanks to its modern hotel infrastructure, the local gastronomy, and many local festivals celebrating Carnival.

Spain and its amazing beaches are undoubtedly idyllic getaways where you will feel the human warmth and the sun shining on your skin.

free accommodation

Travelling (traveller more than tourist) could be expensive… or not. Is up to you how much you want to spend on your trip. Some of us can´t easily afford travelling for different reasons. In my case, I came from a Latin American bankrupt country (Today 1 USD is 37 Pesos) and that’s just for TODAY, besides being the most expensive city in Latin America. But everybody has different realities, and some just have the same problem but others just can’t spend much money on a new adventure. However, for a real traveller, the call of being on the road can’t be denied. Hence, with these 8 ways to not spend any money on accommodation, there are no excuses to take a hike!

Choose one or use many of these alternatives to not spend any money on accommodation

1. Use Helpex, Workaway or Woldpackers: For a very small fee, you can register in these websites where you can find a volunteer job in exchange for free accommodation and food in farms, backpacker hostels, lodges, horse stables and even sailing boats. My experience was directly using Helpex, and I can fully describe them as magnificent! However here are a few important tips from my side who has really experienced this alternative: First, write a distinctive profile, say something that distinguishes you from others, don’t type: “I want free accommodation” express what’s you can really give away and what are you expecting back. Complete your profile info honestly, from your heart. Then when you engage, ask EVERYTHING in advance: How many hours will be working, what kind of job is,  how is the place where you will stay, if the agreement includes food (not always happens) and then check out previous references, and. In my opinion, be working 5 to 6 days for 4, 5 hours are fair enough, otherwise, I am willing to say is Labor exploitation.

2. Volunteer on an organic farm in exchange for work. WWOOF is similar to the websites named above. The main difference is you will be working on sustainable and organic farms and properties. You will be living out of the cities with like-minded people, who really want to make a change in the environment and do something beneficial for the planet.

3. Volunteer in Hostels. It comes along with the first tip. The main difference is you can have the first contact directly with the hostel before you arrive or already there. Are plenty of backpacker’s hostels that need extra help in the high season in exchange of a bed. My advice, for this option, is basically taking a timeout before deciding where to pop in: choose the city you wish to go, then send to all the hostels a direct email or have an approach by Social Networks. Once you have been chosen, remember, have a straight talk about the conditions in advance. Usually, they need cleaners or receptionists.

4. Carry a tent with you. You can sleep not paying accommodation (almost) everywhere. Some countries have free camping and I have met kindness people who allow backpackers camp in their backyard. Moreover, if suddenly the night is upon you, don’t hesitate and just set up the tent right next to the road.

5. Become an Aur pair. Are some websites where you can register as Au pair: Greataurpair is one of those, but also are Facebook groups from different countries where you can get in contact with families free of charges. You will be living and helping a host family by looking after their children and doing some housekeeping. In exchange, you get a free room, learn a new language and what is most important you MUST receive a small salary. So, keep an eye on this as some families, because even in their countries where is not legal, they don’t want to pay a wage.

6. Housesitting or Pet sitting: Are you a pet lover? Can you describe yourself as a reliable person? If so, you can watch someone’s house while you stay on theirs. A fully equipped house will be available for you. Points to be noted: If you don’t like animals or you already are thinking of throwing a party house there: better don’t do it. Some owners have cameras, and reputation is extremely important. Trusted Housesitters, is just one site where a website registration is needed and everybody’s accounts are insightfully verified. but also I have read either in Facebook groups or local websites this kind of offers and there you don’t have to pay a fee. Sometimes couples have priority.

7. House-exchange. First of all, decide a destination and afterwards, you could exchange your home for someone house in that place. Both should agree and give a vote of confidence. In this opportunity, ill definitely recommend a reliable website like www.homeexchange.com due to the properties exchange booths owners needs a far deep commitment. However, browsing you can also see these kinds of exchanges on Facebook groups.

8. Couchsurfing. By far my favourite way to not spend money on accommodation. This platform has been online for several years. Your reputation is sometimes highly important here for request a couch (sometimes is literally one, luckily is a room). But the real idea is not just free hosting, as a non-paid hotel. You must be a real surfer, which means, be willing to spend time with your host, if both agree of course, and have the desire to get immersed in the local lifestyle. I’m an active user of Couchsurfing yet, I always try to spend time with my host or surfer. Be neat, respectful and if I’m the visitor, always help with household’s task or maybe cook dinner. Some people tell me is hard to be accepted, I disagree: if you build a fully complete profile, start hosting in your house, and slowly gain a good reputation,  send personal requests (not copy-paste) and are respectful, in the end,  you will be a compelling person. Being also a solo traveller has more chances of being accepted.

I personally have experience 5 from the 8 ways to not spend any money on accommodation, and I have friends who have tried the other ones. Therefore, I truly know all the pros and cons. Anyways I’ll write in detail each alternative in another’s articles. Meanwhile, no excuses are allowed! You already have options for backpacking and hit the road again!

Learning Spanish

The experience of learning Spanish is unique and more than useful. Since it is the second most spoken language, today due to the break out of the jolly Latin music in the world (who haven’t dance “Despacito” the last years) and the mandatory holidays in Spain and Latin America. For those who have the desire of learning this pleasing language face the challenge of gaining a new knowledge that might takes years. However, as a guide and inspiration, we interviewed Kellie Rock who tells us how he studied it and how he accelerated the learning process. Then if she could… Why not you?

1 Why did you choose to study Spanish and not another language?

In high school, we were only offered Spanish or French classes. I thought that Spanish would be more useful because there are more Spanish speakers living in the U.S., and I thought it would be interesting to visit Central/South America someday.

2 How was your learning process? Did you take classes were you self-taught? If were classes: Private ones or group lessons? Did you start with grammar, listening, vocabulary or reading? And finally, what is the most fun and boring part of learning?

I started with very basic classes in my public high school. We didn’t learn very much – just the basics of grammar and vocabulary. The lessons included reading, writing, and a few listening and speaking exercises. We would be assigned grammar exercises for homework, and take tests to measure our knowledge. Personally, I found this pretty boring. I forgot a lot of the vocabulary and grammar I memorized for the tests because I wasn’t using them regularly.

After high school, I went to university and continued to take Spanish classes. In order to get more practice speaking outside of the classroom, I volunteered at a local Mexican community centre as a community organizer and English teacher. This was really energizing because I was able to use my basic language abilities to help my community.

During university, I spent one semester studying abroad in Ecuador, taking classes and living with a host family. This was the most exciting and effective way to learn. I was totally immersed and able to put into practice everything I was learning in my classes. I also learned a lot about Latin American authors and Ecuadorian culture. I think that language and culture are intricately connected, so the cultural aspect can’t be ignored when learning a new language.

3 What is the most challenging part of learning Spanish?

I think that gaining confidence in speaking is one of the most challenging aspects of learning Spanish. You have to be okay with making lots of mistakes, and not always being able to express yourself exactly as you would in your native language. As an English speaker, it has also been challenging getting used to gendered words in Spanish. I still make mistakes sometimes!

4 What PERSONAL tactics do you use to improve your learning?

I like to watch TV shows and documentaries in Spanish, sometimes with subtitles, to keep my listening skills sharp and learn new words. I also keep a vocabulary list on a note on my phone. Whenever I’m out and about and I learn a new word or phrase, I type it into the list on my phone so I can study it later.

5 What do you do to remain fluent in Spanish?

I moved to a Spanish-speaking country! Even living in Guatemala, I have to make an effort to keep learning new words and practising. Lots of people around me speak English, so it’s easy to just get stuck in an English-speaking bubble and not use as much Spanish. But with a little bit of effort, I find myself in lots of social and professional situations where I can continue learning Spanish every day.

Spanish learning

Spanish is really important in the world

Nowadays most of the people know the importance of Spanish as language. Spanish population continues to grow in quantity (especially in the USA) and this roman language with a sensual sound is becoming more widely spoken throughout the world.

There are 21 countries that have the Spanish as official language whilst in other is spoken in many regions (Andorra, the Philippines for eg). Furthermore, is the second most spoken language, behind the Chinese while tourism in Latin America and Spain are really significant, and still increasing. There are no excuses, what could be better than learn this enchanting language while you are traveling and interacting with a bunch of people in a club where Latin Music is playing?

5 unerring ways to quick learn Spanish

1 .Take lessons but also… Every new language requires some grammar knowledge. To be able of creating a sentence we must understand some structures, the verb conjugations, and basic rules. This is extremely important. But the truth is, as much you can improve on your own beyond the lessons, you will become a fast learner. Try to incorporate into your vocabulary between 5 to 10 new words in Spanish: write them down and record them on your cell phone, and finally make a sentence with it creating an association in your brain. Use purposefully that sentence in a conversation. If you are able to daily memorize at least 5 new worlds, your Spanish vocabulary will widely increase.

2. Spend time in a Spanish speaking country. My main recommendation is to move or spend a few months traveling along to a Spanish speaking country. One month over there is equal to three months of classes. When you have the obligation to communicate with people who don’t speak English your braid immediately will feel the demand, and everything you have learned in the past suddenly will come out. Moreover, you will get used to the sounds, words, and accents.

3. Have Latin Americans or Spaniards friends, or even better… enjoy a romantic relationship with a Spanish speaker. Following the idea of the number 2 tip, being every day in contact with the new language is highly important. Well, nothing stronger than power of LOVE. Have a Latin lover could be intense and full of passion, but also, he or she will motivate you to express your feelings, thoughts or needs. Is when google translate become an unavoidable tool in your life! However, if you already have a boyfriend or girlfriend don’t break up with him or her yet. Just make new Spanish speakers friends who can chat with you every day. Are no excuses, currently find these people is easy through Social Media or language exchange meetings.

4. Start watching movies, TV shows or videos with Spanish subtitles. You will realize some words are similar between English and Spanish, getting used to the sound. Don’t forget take notes about new vocabulary, idioms or sentence! Then when you feel more confident with the language, remove the subtitles, yes NO MORE SUBTITLES! Challenge yourself and make an extra effort to understand what’s going on. Doesn’t matter if you only get a random idea and not the whole speech, that’s is a huge step and is the right path in order to improve. Remember, is always easier if you can catch the movement of the mouth and the facial expressions. Meanwhile, if you are listing music or radio do it with earphones to be deeply concentrated. One hour a day is enough, you might not notice your improvement but believe me, your brain is definitely assimilating all the information.

5. Trust on yourself and be kind to you. Everybody makes mistakes, don’t be shy to speak out and ask for help if you don’t remember a word or you are feeling stuck in a conversation. Most of the people are happy to help you and they are not going to tease you. But it would happen, just laugh at yourself. Nobody is perfect, and as soon you start taking your first class, go out and implement your new language skills (even saying a few words) In that way, you will feel promptly motivated, curious and encourage to keep up with the lessons. On the other hand, remember patience is the clue, all new learning takes time and dedication, just enjoy every step you have done.

If you are English Speaker and you want to follow these steps don’t hesitate to write me in Spanish, I will happily be your Spanish speaker friend who can practice with. Never mind if you are not Penelope Cruz or Antonio Banderas speaking or writing, the effort if what is count though.  In the end, my English is not even perfect…and I’m not so worried about that.

¡Suerte!
